Spomenik in Pijavičino, Croatia

Spomenik monuments are to be found throughout the former Yugoslavia. Some are huge brutalist structures, others smaller and more modest. This one near the coastal town of Trstenik on the beautiful Peljesac Peninsula in southern Croatia, is a monument to fallen NOVJ partisan fighters and victims of fascism in World War II. Adjacent to the soaring monument, with its breathtaking views and curved sculptural frieze, are the ruins of a communist-era hotel.
