Preston Bus Station refurbishment

public buildings

Grade-II listed Preston Bus Station is a brutalist landmark. Designed by BDP and originally opened in 1969, it was recently threatened with demolition and had suffered through decades of neglect. Architect John Puttick Associates won the competition to refurbish the landmark building. This included improving the bus station's integration with the surrounding city, creating a new coach station in part of the existing building, and brightening the interior.

The photography was commissioned to show the vast building in use, highlighting new features and illustrating how the building had been reorientated. It was published widely, including the cover of The Architects' Journal.
